VR developers can now begin building virtual reality experiences for Google’s new VR platform Daydream. While the first Daydream smartphones won’t be released until fall, the Daydream VR SDK is now out of beta and can be downloaded from Google’s developer site.
The public was first made aware of the Daydream platform at Google I/O. Google also announced that it would be developing its own VR headset to work with the platform. This headset has not yet been made available.
Developers creating apps for Daydream, will need to apply for the Daydream Access Program. While Daydream specific phones are not yet on the market, the Nexus 6P is approved for the SDK. While not a perfect fix, it will allow developers to test out their app before the official release of Daydream.
The Daydream VR SDK 1.0 has been designed to simplify VR development, so that developers are able to focus on designing their apps. The developer site will include tutorials and sample apps, along with full documentation, to make it easier to get started with developing apps for the platform.
