Imax and Warner Bros are entering the world of VR filmmaking with three Superhero VR experiences. The VR experiences will feature the Justice League, Aquaman and one more superhero film yet to be announced. The three films will coincide with the release of the associated blockbuster films.
The first of the three films to be released will be Justice League in 2017, followed by the other experiences over the next three years.
The experiences will be exclusively delivered through Imax VR Centres before being released on other platforms. The first of these was launched in Los Angeles in early 2017. There are five more of these centres planned for the UK, Shanghai, California and New York City. Imax Corp CEO Richard Gelfond states that
“this will be the first wave of high end blockbuster content”
Warner Bros and Imax see a huge amount of appeal for these types of experience given the character’s iconic nature and the large existing fanbase. They believe that it will help to introduce the idea of premium VR experiences provided in Imax VR centres.
If the concept proves popular it may potentially the Justice League will be many people’s first VR experience. It will also introduce audiences to a new entertainment format at these VR centres.
